October in the Hocking Hills

Autumn is beautiful in many areas of the United States, but here in the Hocking Hills the experience is breathtakingly awesome. The nature is intense. It smothers you with color. The primeval forests rain a torrent of leaves alive with hues an artist would envy. If you’re planning on visiting the Hocking Hills now, finding a place to stay is difficult as most lodging facilities have been booked for weeks.

Check with www.1800hocking.com or www.hockinghills.com, both local directories include a consolidated availability booking engine that searches for open dates amongst its members. A huge time saver. OK then, where should you stay, what should you do, and what’s for dinner. Glad you asked.

There are many fine lodging choices, but here are the best of the best.

Luxury Lodging

Cherry Ridge Retreat

Cherry Ridge Retreat

The Lake House at Cherry Ridge Retreat:  A world-class resort in the heart of the Hocking Hills. We like to think of The Lake House as the crown jewel of Cherry Ridge Retreat. Principally reserved for discriminating couples seeking one-of-a-kind accommodations where only the best is good enough. The Lake House includes a 2.5 acre Angler’s Paradise—boat included. Our deep water aeration system allows superior fish species to grow and thrive. The lake is stocked with striped and large mouth bass, hybrid blue gill, perch and sauger.

OK then you have a place to stay, now where to go and what to do. Do visit the state parks of course but why not fly through the trees and see nature like a laughing and screaming for joy bird?

Must Do Attraction in the Hocking Hills

Fine Dining

There are two choices for fine dining that I would recommend, Shaws Inn and The Grouse Nest. Both are excellent. Shaw’s Restaurant features American and Global cuisine with a reputation for aged in-house steaks and Fresh Seafood. The daily changing menu reflects the seasons and Shaw’s strives to use local produce when available. An extensive wine list and cocktails are available 7 days a week. They also have a bar, outside dining is available and they have live music on occasion. www.shawsinn.com

The Grouse Nest Restaurant at the Hocking Hills Resort, is located just around the corner from Ash Cave State Park and is open year round serving lunch and  dinner. American Cuisine is featured with creative signature entrees, scrumptious desserts and excellent service. Foods that are indigenous to Ohio are incorporated on the menu, such as Catfish, Venison and other Wild Game. Outdoor seating is available during the warm months. You won’t want to miss experiencing the Grouse Nest Restaurant while visiting the Hocking Hills. www.ashcave.com/grouse_nest

Enjoy the trip!

It’s a Beautiful Day

Wind Chime Shop Logo

It was a beautiful day, another in a long list of beautiful days in the Hocking Hills and I thought I’d go for a drive. Where to go though, I wasn’t sure but before long I found myself heading South out of Logan on State Route 93. Newly paved SR-93, I might add. The road was smooth, the weather was perfect and the destination was, well I was letting the truck find its own way.

Before long I came to a fork in the road with a tourism sign announcing the “Wind Chime Shop”. Feeling a bit musical that’s where I headed. The drive to the Wind Chime Shop is very scenic and by the time I arrived I was relaxed and feeling good about life in general. And I figured lets see what this little out-of-the-way shop has to offer.

They have a mind boggling array of chimes, all tinkly and shiny. Reminded me of a marching band tuning up before a march. Your basic cacophony of sound. And smells too! They also have a candle shop. Cooooooool.

Prices were reasonable and my sisters birthday was in two weeks, need I say more. It was a still a beautiful day but now my truck sounded and smelled good on the way back. Life is good.
